If there is something that always strikes
me about Nevermore's music, it's the emotional power of the songs they construct.
It's unusual these days to find a metal band who so seamlessly combines
emotions conveyed through the lyrics and the music they produce. Nevermore are
surely one of the best at this art.
This five–tracker (and second release)
shows Nevermore with just as much sorrow for the world as they have anger for
the "pigs" that live in it. The way the EP kicks in with
"Optimist"'s aggressive riff spits just as much venom in the face of
the listener as Warrel Dane's angered vocals. The musicianship is hugely
impressive, from Van Williams' great drumming through to Jeff Loomis'
absolutely wild solos. This EP illustrates moods that are within Nevermore's
grasp and the various ways they can bring them to you, whether that be by
crushing power chords or clean–tone, picked parts. The Bauhaus cover works well
in their hands, and fits well within the songs around it.
I recommend this EP to anyone who is
curious about Nevermore, it doesn't cover their whole range, but it is still up
to their high standards
